Why is it interesting? The posted speed law is based on fuel
consumption.

It isn't here

It was nationwide in 1974, following the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973.

Greg was not even driving then.

Most of the country has since returned to pre-'74 limits.

Only because our cars get better mileage. There's evidence that
speeds faster than 55 are more dangerous, so if it truly were speed-
based, we'd still drive 55.

Hate to break it to you, but If I use my new truck for an example, I get noticeably better fuel economy at 55 than 70 mph, my State's top speed limit. 12% to 20% better, haven't done enough comparison to peg it closer.

Same here:

55mph---24mpg
65mph---20mpg
75mph---18mpg

I figure it's partly gearing, and partly wind resistance.

YMMV

Better safety features in newer vehicles did as much or more to win back the original limits, as well as the unpopularity of the 55.

But thanks for clearing it up for Joe. I hate to be the one to turn
on the lights every time.

Flashing your parking lights again?

Something to think about, from a wise man now long dead….:

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American.
“There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all.
“We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
