All agreed, but I just happened to own the Sony MD-walkman, especially as
back then, it was the only device small enough to hide under clothing and
still record a lot of quality audio (5hrs) without even any clicks at the
end of a tape or so.
No, not for ripping music from concerts (wich must be pretty poor quality
actually) but to record interviews with suspects without clearly having
any
recording devices.
The trick was to move the audio to PC by USB-cable instead of
phone-out-jack
to mic-in-jack. The latter loses a lot of quality, wich is pretty
important
in court!

You're using the wrong sound card if you're losing that much quality.
Trust me, I know. I'm the
"IT guy" at a PD. I've got some computers that I can transfer by audio
cable and some that I can't.
A quick test will tell me which one a specific computer is.
I will admit that there is some loss anytime you transfer this way, but
many sound cards lose so
little that most people wouldn't be able to tell which was the original
and which was a reproduction
without specialized equipment (or *especially* sensitive ears).
Well worth a try with prices for soundcards as low as they are today. Then
again, would have bet my Creative LAbs Soundblaster pro something should be
in the upper legue.
