It's so much fun being a Democrat

Those who know me well enough, know that, despite my very conservative
beliefs, I'm a registered Democrat. It's a holdover from the days when, in
the South, you were either a Democrat or you weren't worth considering. I'm
what's often called a Dixiecrat. At any rate, my registered party
affiliation often provides amusing information. The following is as amusing
as anything I've seen for a while.
Before you read this, and my comments at the end, remember that we're
talking about the people that think the second amendment, "A well regulated
militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the
people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" doesn't mean what it
says. Having said that, here's what I got today.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Lee,
The separation of church and state is the fundamental bedrock of our
liberty. Unless, of course, you're Rick Santorum and his right-wing friends
at Justice Sunday III this weekend. To them, the constitutional protection
of religious liberty is nothing more than an outdated notion that stands in
their way of absolute power.
That's why it was so important for you to stand up to them last week and
stand up you did. Thousands of you joined the DSCC's campaign to send a
message to Rick Santorum asking him to stop pandering to the right-wing
extremists and to support the fundamental American principle of separation
of church and state. Thank you so much.
Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Santorum and his buddies went ahead and
spent all day blasting our time-honored constitutional protections and
telling right-wing activists that the only way to undo decades of social
progress is to elevate Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.
Santorum himself accused so-called "liberal judges" of "destroying
traditional morality" and "imposing its unrestrained will on all of the
people." I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned, ending
segregation and protecting the rights of women is exactly what the
traditional morality of "all men are created equal" and "justice for all" is
about.
Santorum's Justice Sunday friends went even further. Tony Perkins,
president of the ultraconservative Family Research Council and the organizer
of all three Justice Sundays called federal judges "tyrannical" for
suggesting that "a Christian check his or her faith at the door before
entering the public realm."
Apparently, Perkins thinks that all political questions should be decided by
what his pastor says, not by what the law and the Constitution say -
although he might make an exception for Samuel Alito.
The truth is that the results of Justice Sunday III prove once again why we
can't afford to let Rick Santorum and his right-wing allies have an extra
minute in power. With your help, the DSCC will defeat Rick Santorum in
Pennsylvania and elect a Democratic Senate in November. Please make a
contribution today.

Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not going to be making an
secure online contributions to Anne's cause. If I thought for a second that
she had a cause, I might, but I don't. Anne speaks of the separation of
church and state as a constitutional right. After years of repetition, many
share her belief. Here, however, is the text of the First Amendment.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to
petition the government for a redress of grievances. "
Anybody see the words separation, church or state anywhere in there?
So, "the right to keep and bear arms" is not a constitutionally guaranteed
right but "separation of church and state" is. Sorry Anne, but that's not
how it works.
Lee
