Well, the decision has been made. I went with Bellsouth. What happened
since is interesting to say the least:
I contacted sales to find out what equipment I needed. They didn't have a
clue. I mentioned a wireless gateway, what their website calls the router
they offer and she thought I was talking about a Gateway computer. When I
asked if I needed a Wireless adapter if all my satellite computers are wifi
equpped, she didn't know. Neither did her manager. So, she sent me to tech
support. The tech support person didn't know either. I did, however, learn
to call it a router if i wanted to be understood.
Finally, I found somebody that could confirm that I did not need the adapter
for my application. The same person told me that the $5.00 network charge
(for nothing at all) would not apply to me.
So, I went online to purchase the service. Three hours later, I still had
not been able to complete the process. The company that will provide me
with internet, mail and group service in the future, can't keep their
servers up long enough to take an order. About an hour ago, I manged to
complete the process. If I charged them my usual rate, they would have
wound up paying me to use their service.
As I went through the order process, I found that I could order a DSL modem
with no wireless capacity if I told the system I would not hook up other
computers. If I told the system I wanted to hook up another computer, I got
the router I needed . . . and a wireless adapter I didn't need . . . for
$49.95. I could tell the system I was going to hook up two to four
computers and get the router and 1 to three adapters or I could tell it I
was going to hook up only one computer and get the modem with no adapters,
but also no wireless router. I could not tell the system I wanted the
router with no adapters.
So, now I'm set to get the network router and one desktop adapter, at a cost
of $49.95 over the cost of what I actually need. With only a little
thought, I asked Jayna if she's like my old notebook. She said yes, giving
me a reason for the adapter that Bellsouth insisted I wanted . . . except
it's for a desktop, not a laptop. Tomorrow, I'll try to straighten that
out.
Oh yes, the $5.00 additional monthly charge for network service may not
apply to me in the eyes of the salesperson or the tech contact, but it
damned sure does in the eyes of the system that took my order.
I'll have 3mbs download, 380 something kbs upload service and a wireless
network all for $47.95 a month plus hidden taxes and pass though of
regulatory costs.
It's the beginning of a beautiful relationship . . . as long as they don't
threaten my life someplace I have a right to be.
