Christianity has been a national standard in this country since
conception. That doesn't mean everyone was Christian.
It's a vague term defined in the eye of the beholder. Law and
requirement should not be substituted for value or standard.
Very sensible and well put Hugh; now if only Stan could
be persuaded . . .
Hi Hugh,
Welcome back. We've missed you! :-)
Graham
Thank you, Graham. I was at out house in AL for most of the 2+ months
I was gone, with side trips to TX, MS and FL. I have my laptop in AL
but no server to read the news groups.
Last week in FL I tied my son once and beat him once at golf. That's
almost unheard of. Of course I cheat and he doesn't.
Yes, welcome back. Admittedly, you haven't missed
much edifying debate; it's mostly been going round
in circles.
However, there have been highlights. The one I
enjoyed most was, after Stan had insisted dozens
and dozens of times that "duty to God" was inclusive
of "all" religions and "all" boys, he then told us that
Israeli scouts didn't have that phrase in the oath
because some Jews would consider it to be a
violation of the Jewish commandments! Talk
about fumbling the ball!
And when I pointed this out to him Stan could only
resort to abuse.

There is right and wrong and opinion.
There is also, re: BSA, I don't care whether people think it's right
or wrong, that's how it's going to be even if sacrifices have to be
made - "sacrifice" meaning something you have previously received but
may not in the future. BSA, even if non-discriminatory, is not the
panacea for all that ails this country. We have become the States of
America - "United" is gone forever.
In a news group like this it is "usually" a mistake to state without
equivocation. It is "usually" better to leave a little maneuvering
room. That can "more" easily be done by adding a qualifying word such
as "almost" or "most" or "many" in the example above. That "seldom"
means that one's position is weakening, it "more often than not" means
that the statement becomes more difficult to attack. In the last I
wanted to use "impossible to attack" but I noticed my scars!!!
As we have discussed before there is no common ground between us with
BSA insofar as qualifications for membership. As it is, I'm in and you
are out. Change it to your wishes, no matter how intelligently
phrased, and you're in and I'm out.
Hugh
