Nope, the analogy fails, for the simple reason that "duty to country"
is the "patriotic" part of the Scout Oath, while "duty to God" is a
separate point.
In addition, that part of the Scout Oath comes from the original by BP,
and it does indeed carry a faith connotation.
Fine, then please explain that to Stan, who has repeatedly
interpreted "duty to God" in terms of what he calls "patriotic
values" of ONUG and IGWT that he claims "include all
Americans", thus stripping "duty to God" of any faith content.
You could also explain it to the new head of BSA, who seems
to feel that believing in "some rock in Japan" fullfills a "duty to
God".
Maybe BSA and Scouters could talk among themselves and
then come up with a coherent statement about whether "duty to
God" is a faith declaration that excludes those who lack any
belief in God, or whether it is an empty phrase that has no
meaning.
