I use a Polar S625x on almost all my runs and my xt class, xc skiing,
mtn biking, etc.

Actually cycling is my MAIN sport/fitness but have
taken up running this winter as I don't have a mt bike
just road bikes and it gets pretty nasty here street
wise in winter. Too much dust and chat on roads and
don't like idea of inhaling it!

And if I really want detailed data on long runs, I use my handheld
Garmin GPSmap 60csx in my backpack.

Well that was another idea..... instead of spend $90 on
Garmin 50 unit just go buy a Garmin Etrex model and
carry in fanny pack or something. And that cold also
be used on bicycle in summer. What think?

Thing is..... can the garmin Edge Garmin my pace and
such since it will very between running and walking?

however, I (former math major, still data geek) do like to play with
numbers, graphs, and maps. I've played with topo maps since I was a kid
in scouts. Other people prefer other kinds of play toys.

HA!! That answers it, I'm a math geek as
well....matter of fact taking diffy Q soon.

YMWV - your mileage WILL vary most likely. That's why I've tried to give
you the low end approach for what's really needed, if anything. I
started with a much simpler hrm (before 625 came out), which worked ok,
but the improvements in the 625 and software were worth the money for me.

Agree on starting low end but hard to know what you
really need since new to it.

MAIN things I need:

*User configurable alarms that allow me to set them so
will "tell" me when to run and when to walk

*BIG display for older eyes

* Low cost.... but not so cheap as to be unusable.
