Greetings rec.runners! Please tell us about your training week and goals.

Still suffering some effects of over-training or whatever it was/is. A
week of running by heart rate (with the "finger on neck with eyes on
watch every ten minutes" model of HRM) has me feeling a little less
crappy and my resting heart rate a little lower but not back to normal
(mid 50s instead of ~50).
I need to know now, though, if I can ramp up for an October marathon or
whether I should scrap any fall racing plans and take the rest of the
summer off. If I'm struggling to hold steady mileage now I'm not going
to be able to increase mileage significantly in August and September. So
I ran a long (16 miles in nearly three hours, ugh) run today and will
make my decision based on how/if I recover by tomorrow. Right now I'm
hoping that I feel like crap so I can quit running because I hate it but
I realize that in itself is a symptom of over-training so I'm trying not
to give in to it.
I still don't understand what happened. In less than three weeks I've
gone from feeling very good and confident about my training and looking
forward to increasing my mileage to hoping I never have to run again.
It's been frustrating.
Two weeks ago I was forced by travel to limit my running, missing four
days, running one, then missing two days. The run after missing four
days was delightful, but I attributed that to the fact that I was
running in a new area and it was not routine. But after returning
home, my runs have been much better, more bounce in my step, less post
run fatigue.
Rather than giving up on the whole kit, you might try a short break to
see how that leaves you. The gap was in the middle of my marathon
training, and I worried about the impact to that training, but now
think it was a blessing. I got through my most recent long run, 17.5
miles, in intense heat and humidity and have recovered rather quickly.
On the subject of recovery, I have not recovered from a long run in a
day, in fact I'm usually OK the next day and the worst time (dead
legs) is two days after, then it gets better from there.
Hope it works out well for you.
Frank
