I said I was a newbie to running, not to exercising. But OK, you can
editorialize about irrational couch potatoes thinking they can drop
pounds of fat with some magic pills, a RonCo Tummy Toner[TM], and
maybe a few slow laps around the block.
I'd think anything that gets them off the couch would be a good
thing, myself, but hey let's be sure to get those digs on to those
people who are motivated by wanting less fat on their bodies. I
guess being able to look down on them folks is obviously a superior
motivation, eh?
Richard, as someone who believes that e.g. a film might "say"
something entirely different from what the director intended, it'd be
hypocritical of me to insist you've misread my post by willfully
seeing it as an insult flung your way.
I'm not a couch potato, and have never purchased a Ronco Tummy Toner
[TM] or anything like it -- nor do I ever expect I will get any
result I want unless I bust my ass for it -- so I in no way feel
personally insulted by your post. Hold that thought, if you would.
But at least on an objective basis, I don't believe I've ever, not
even in my post to you, advocated an ice-cream only diet.
Yes, I am a fan of the stuff, or frozen yogurt. A big fan. I think
enjoying some ice cream afterward is a fine reason to run, to extend a
run, to sneak in an extra run.
But please do eat some produce too, and ideally a lot more plants than
dairy fat + sugar. You give the impression of having a good grasp of
that, entirely likely moreso than I do.
If (if? ha!) I pontificate, it's with full awareness that I'm just
giving one reporter's opinion, and it's also with a notion that I'm
offering it to anyone within eyeshot. For every wreck.running poster
there's N lurkers and also X folks who'll read a thread weeks or years
later when it turns up from something they googled. We're scrawling
on the stall of a public bathroom on a turnpike rest stop here, not
having a private conversation, is how I see it.
Ah. It's "for the kids" in other words. Yes, I picked up on that --
since I'm not one of those folks who thinks a little toe-wiggling and
a magic formula will melt the pounds away, I figured you had to be
insulting not me but someone else.
Nonetheless, I really don't think there's any need to insult those
folks who might simply want to get rid of the freaking fat they've
accumlated over some period of time and stumble across your post in
the vast number of search hits that might lead to it, by categorizing
them all as something-for-nothings.
If, on the other hand, I truly aim to insult you, I sure hope you'll
unambiguously know it! Otherwise I'm way the hell off my game.
Ideally in that case you'll return fire with wit and passion.
Congrats on your progress, with the running and with the weight. I
hope you become a lifelong runner. Ain't too many other things as
rewarding in so very many ways.
Thank you. I hope to become one as well. I can certainly imagine it
taking place.
I have hardly seen a field of human endeavor, where stratification
layers exist between neophytes and experts, that is free of pecking-
order enforcement. Running is no exception; in fact, it seems to be
thick with it. That's OK; the most I can do is come up to speed as
quickly and safely as possible and take the rest as good-naturedly as
I can at each point in time that I come across it.
"Stratification"?? Pecking order?
Is that the same as, My *** is MUCH bigger than yours??
Seems like everyone on the web has 18 goddamm inches, except me.
And I think the women are.... oh, let me stop here....
Eat few calories, and what those calories are composed of
isn't as much of a concern as I hear it is.
In the narrow context of the fat-burning aspect of running.
For general health and all sorts of specific reasons, what those
calories are composed of could well be important. And even for
running, you may find there are dietary considerations - e.g. there's
very few foods I trust I can run within a short time after eating;
some foods (the unbelievably spicy & oily double whammy of Sichuan
food) that are a bad idea for me even eight hours before a run; etc.
I find I crave a heaping teaspoon of Smart Balance peanut butter (the
one that's heavy with Omega-3 fats) before I hit the streets. My
original post was motivated by my wondering if I effectively negate
any fat burn by indulging that craving. It's a guilty pleasure, but
I have noticed that I've been far less prone to tendon inflamation
since I've focused on getting Omega-3 fats into my diet...
In nutrition, an adage goes, There are no bad foods, only bad habits.
But, in some cases, there ARE bad foods, and *some* peanuts, incl. peanut
butter can be quite among them, due to the product of a fungal contaminant
called aflatoxins, a truly miserable substance, deadly at the DNA level.
Big Food has about as many scruples as BigPharm and Big Oil, so you can bet
that the details involved in processing peanuts into butter are probably on
par with yer local chinese takeout in a neighborhood with missing cats.
Nuts in general, however, are super-excellent, and you should use your
cravings for peanuts to go to the next level: almonds, cashews, walnuts,
pistachios, etc. Eating them one by one, with raw oats etc, allows you to
better control intake.
You might be able to disarm aflatoxins with heat, like botulism, but I'm not
sure.
The nutritional literature disputes the validity of cravings having
nutritional/metabolic merit or use, but I am a big believer that they
do--just like in animals. Satisfying them intelligently is likely the right
thing to do.
I'd stop short of Charlie's peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, as I think
there is a sig diff between satisfying cravings and fueling addictions. :)
And believe me, if I weren't afraid of needles, I'd mainline Haagen Dazs.
:) :)
I'm in *constant* withdrawal. :(
Other sources of omega 3 is avocado, and of course salmon.
Wed, btw, I pick up an F6 monitor, with a 25% coupon from Sports Authority.
msrp is $119, typical street is $109, now less 25%. Whining and crying can
pay off, occasionally. Thank gawd....
Looking forward to fooling around with this hrm, as Le Wife couldn't find my
pulse, either!! I sure hope the Polar can find it!!!!

Ah, the Internet: I miss the days when using a computer was a pretty
good indicator of intelligence.
