turned ankle - is it serious?

Hi all,
I am training for a marathon, week 4 of HHMT intermediate,
specifically. 7 days ago I turned my right ankle, and while I could
have hobbled in pain the rest of the way I didn't want to overstrain
my left leg compensating so I walked. I didn't ice it or anything so
it swelled up. It was painful to walk thereafter but since then it's
gotten better each day - no jogging at all. Yesterday I could walk
with no pain at all (though it was weak, and still hurt to move side
to side) so I went for a test 3mi. jog and it worked fine. But I got
up this morning and it has gone back to hurting like it was 3 days ago
- not like the beginning, but clear regression. So it's a bummer I
won't be able to jog our city's July 4th 10K.
Does anyone have experience with this severity of sprain? I've been
jogging for 3 years on sidewalks and this is my first ankle turn.
1. Should I see a doctor?
2. After the pain eventually subsides, how long should I wait before
jogging, because my test jog demonstrated that jogging too early will
just delay my recovery.
3. In the meantime, I am going crazy - what are good exercises to
give me my runner's high until it heals?
Thanks,
Dan
.
