It is so easy to lose concentration in such a situation. Especially
in parts of the trail which look deceptively smooth but which are
covered by a layer of leaves.

So true, it's normally the 'easy' looking patches that trip you up. Once
you're in alert mode, you can usually catch your weight before you put all
your weight on a bad footplant.

Build base up to 8+ hours/week for Spring orienteering, 5ks, and

Do you orienteer every year?

No, but it's always on my mind. Orienteering is what got me into running
when I was a teen, 27 years ago, and it's still something that I love to do
*if* my body can stand up to it. The northeastern USA where I live mostly
has very rough rocky forests where events take place, and unless you just
hike very slow, your body gets tested. I've done events within the past 10
years, but not every year. So one goal is to get fit and tough enough to
endure a series of o-events and keep running in between them, something that
I often couldn't do even in my youth when my style was to essentially crash
through the woods. Don't know what events I will try to do, but the close-by
West Point military academy 2 day national meet comes to mind, one that I've
done many times in the past.
