A sad passing, Dr. Ralph Paffenbarber, who first documented the benefit
of running on longevity, died recently. He showed that moderate
exercise (20 miles per week) could increase your life span by several
years. His rule of thumb - - each hour of exercise will give you 2-3
extra hours of life. He also took his own advice: he started running
at age 45, and eventually ran 22 Boston marathons (and many others).
He passed away at age 84.
The evidence that one lives a longer if they exercise holds true over
big numbers of people. OTOH, if people's primary reasons take up
running/exercise is to live longer, well I have a bridge to sell them.
Genetics, diseases, jealous husbands and even bad drivers can send you
to premature resting place.
Exercise will increase your odds but I look at it as quality of life
while I'm still breathing regardless of my number if years. Science
has found lots of ways to keep us alive even while we abuse ourselves.
I have a house full of the wife's sisters staying with us and they are
60-70 yars old. None have ever exercsed and take about 4 pills a day
for High Blood pressure, etc. I take nothing at least yet.
