Re: how do you eat most of the time?

Many of you are running pretty high mileage, and I was just wondering if you
need to eat a pretty clean or special diet to maintain the energy to perform
and recover from higher mileage? I've been trying to eat "clean". Not much
fat, fast food, junk food, eating more fresh stuff, lean, etc. Obviously
this is a better way to eat for anyone. But besides eating generally
healthy, do you put more thought into it than that? Like do you watch to
see what your carb/protein/fat breakdown is? Do you eat more on or after
longer runs for recovery?

I'm just wanting to optimize my running. Lately it seems like I have days
where I am flat exhausted, and have no energy, particularly the day or two
after a longer run. My eating pretty much stays the same, and I wonder if I
should be changing something. I don't think it helps that I'm still trying
to get a little leaner, and trying to achieve a caloric deficit and increase
mileage doesn't seem to be working.

Here's an anecdote that likely won't apply to you or others.
I enjoy bananas. They are supposed to be so healthy and provide
energy. The day after I eat several bananas, I really struggle with
every step. I start wanting to get home and rest. A day after not
eating bananas, my full energy returns. I've repeated this process
many times through the years. There's something in bananas that takes
my energy away. I encourage you to experiment with eliminating certain
things to see if you can find a trigger food that does the same for
you.
