I'm curious, esp. since we have a number of beginners here now, what /
who influenced your early running? Some may have started in elementary
school or jr hi or hs or have parents that run while others started
later in life being self-coached and books, monthly pubs, or online
groups may be more of an influence. How has that changed over time?
Dot, this time around (getting back into running after a long period
of failed attempts), you've been a huge influence for me!
Oh, geez. That's scary. ;)
For one
thing, I keep telling myself if you could do it up there in Alaska, I
can do it here in Boston... that's kept me lacing up my shoes all
through this past winter. I also appreciate all your advice because it
has all been the most useful and the most relevant to where I am at at
this point in my life.
Glad I could be of help to someone with my ramblings. Some of the winter mtn bikers are active in our trail groups - including the guy that builds the fat-tire bikes and the RD for Iditarod Trail Invitational (run, bike, ski, take your pick) that goes 350 or 1100 mi in winter. When I see what those people race through and how they've solved some of the winter running problems (keeping fluids fluid), I use them as models. No matter what the weather, it's always worse elsewhere. And sometimes they just hole up until weather improves.
Earlier on, I did read a ton of books, but they are all still packed
away in boxes from our last move, so I can't remember what I read. The
books are great although sometimes too cookie cutter and not very
relevant for people who aren't all that fast.
Bingo. That's my issue also - and why the effort-based training works so
much better. These work for everybody with any kind of running surface and weather. And I don't have to know how far I went.
