stress fracture on femur?? 6b8b4567

Hi, I'm a 38 years old runner and 167cm, 55kg, and male. I am very
thin, and this could mean that I have nutrition problems. At bottom I
would attach the details of my running history.

3 weeks ago, I had leg injuries like following.

SYMPTOMS:

(1) I walked limping with a little knee pain. I cannot load weight on
left leg. I felt NO acute pain.

(1) At first, I had to hold stairs-side-bars to walk the stairs!!!!

(1) A little knee pain on both side.

(1) I cannot jump on left leg. I can do jump on right leg many times.

(1) I CAN stand on only left leg without any pain. When I tried to
jump on left foot, I felt that kneed bend mechanism of left leg
strange and unnatural.

(1) Stand still, when I shake hip left and right, I felt some pain in
the left groin and left knee.

(1) Stand still, when I put left foot in front of the right foot, I
felt some pain in the left groin and left knee. Thereby it is
difficult for me to walk alongside a straight line exactly.

(1) I realized that left foot always touches its front part first.

(2) it was difficult for me to hop on only left leg.

(3) I realized that when I walk, right leg makes a small angle when it
touches ground, but left leg does not make an angle, that is, a
straight leg. For body to overcome the straight leg is difficult, so I
had to more time on left leg, and I had to heighten my body, and this
is the limping!!!

(4) By analysing (3) I came to the conclusion that my left leg was
shortened!!!

AFTER MEETING orthopedist, and NOW

More and more I can walk not limping. I almost come back to normal
condition, almost fully recovered. However I felt somewhat feeling on
the area of the femur head, which is located in the leftmost part of
the left hip, and that feeling started about 3 days before. I dont
know it is pain or not, just uncomfortable feeling.

Putting the left leg over the right leg (putting left shin over right
knee) sitting in a chair. Doing this I felt some pain on the left
femur. It was very difficult mission for me. I can put easily left
calf over right knee lying on the bed, making '4' shape. However from
this when I tried to get up I feel pain on the femur neck. (The top
part of the femur)

While I did lots of massages on every part of the left leg using left
hand, I felt no acute pain anywhere. And I feel some uncomfortable
feeling at the area from the femur top(bent location) to the half of
the femur. Somewhat 1/4 part of left femur, upper and outer part. I
feel that feeling sitting in a chair, while it weaks when I walk.

Do you have any opinions? Was the cause of my problem a stess fracture
on the femur? Should I take MRI or bone scan immediately? Should I
change doctor?

Thanks

Injury History

Running History

[1] BEFORE INJURY
------------------------------------------------------

2006 Sep - 2007 Dec: Did lots of stretching to imitate Michael Jackson
dance style, ex, moonwalk.
2006 Dec - 2007 Feb: running with one day(10k), one day(10k), one
day(rest)

2007 Feb details

Wed 14 === 2k (urethane)
Thr 15 === 10k (urethane) (49 minutes)

Wed 21 === 14k (urethane)
Fri 23 === 12k (urethane)
Sat 24 === 10k (urethane)
Sun 25 === 12k (urethane)

Tue 27 === 10k (urethane) (48 minutes)

Before I had no knee injuries, no thigh injuries. I got only calf
soreness.
Now I thought I need speed work, like interval training.

[2] INJURY
--------------------------------------------------------------

March

Thr 1 ===25k (urethane) (AM 12k + PM 12k)
I noticed two thighs are swollen and heat-generating without any pain.

Fri 2 ===3k (urethane) (two thighs are not swollen)
Sat 3 ===10k (urethane) (100m walk + 200m run ...)

I registered at a health gym, and

Sun 4 === (in the health gym) I ran in a treadmill about 12km/h, 20
minutes
with BARE FOOT and only using front part of feet to absorb shocks.

Mon 5 === (in the health gym) I did the same of day 4, and did leg
press, and standing bicycle(30minutes)
Tue 6 === off.
Wed 7 === (in the health gym) I did the same of day 4 on running
shoes, and did leg press, and standing bicycle(30minutes)
Thr 8 === off. I felt a mild knee pain of the right leg, not acute
pain.
Fri 9 ===

I purchased two knee guards.

(in the health gym) I did

(1) I did running(30 minutes) (on marathon shoes) like this

0 min - 5 min : walked slowly at speed 3-5km/h

5 min - 15 min : at speed 7km/h, INTENTIONALLY jump using left foot,
land on the front part of right foot, off the right foot, land on the
front part of the left foot. At this exercise, I tried to elongate the
time during which the left foot is contact on ground in order to
lengthen the jump span. Doing this I could shorten the stride rate,
and I thought this exercize would help me to lengthen stride length.
Yes, this was my own exercice to make stride length longer. (left-
right long stride, right->left short stride)

15 min - 25 min : at speed 12km/h, did the same right above.

25 min - 30 min : slowly speed down and walked.

(2) 30 minutes bicycle
(3) leg press about 2-3 minutes
(4) 15 minutes bicycle
(5) leg press about 2-3 minutes
(6) leg wider, a chair-like machine at which I sat and close/open my
legs like scissors
In the middle of this excersize, suddenly I felt a mild pain, and I
thought that some part muscle of groin was lengthened.

(7) I once again tried to do (1). However as soon as I started to run
at the treadmill, a very acute pain was created at the center of calf
muscle of the left leg. It was so acute that I felt as if the calf was
hit by a bullet, and I promptly got out the treadmill.

(8) And I stopped exercise and left health gym, and afterwards I did
not go the gym and NEVER.

Sat 10 === 18k (urethane) (100m walks + 300m runs + sometimes 1,000m
runs)

After this run, I started limping. But I did not thought it was due to
injuries because I had no pain.

Sun 11 === off day.

Mon 12 === 14k(urethane) (walk/run)

All day I was limping without any pain. When I tried to jump using
only on left leg, I felt it is very difficult to jump, and I could not
2 hops. Standing still, when I tried to lift heels, I felt my left
knee was forced to go forward than normal case. When I tried to run, I
felt some pain near the parts of left knee, and I felt my left foot
used to contact ground with its front part. By that, for some minutes
of the run, I ran limping, but after about 3 km, I could run without
any pain and without any abnormality. However after the run, I walk
limping again.

Tue 13 === off

Wed 14 === 10k (urethane) symptom same as 12 day. I could not hop on
left leg.
Thr 15 === 10k (urethane) symptom same as 12 day. I could not hop on
left leg.

Sat 17 === 4k (urethane) symptom same as 12 day. As you see from the
previous my runs, I could run after some minutes of limping. But I
could not run at all this day. I ran 4km limping and failed to run.

Sun 18 === 15k (400m track/earth) same as 12 day. This day I made a
success of making a run, and I could run 15 sec on 100m also.

[3] AFTER INJURY
--------------------------------------------------------------

Mon 19 === I walked limping so seriously that I felt like I need a
crutch.

So from this day I STOPPED running.

(1) I walked limping with a little knee pain. I cannot load weight on
left leg. I felt NO acute pain.
(1) I had to hold stairs-side-bars to walk the stairs!!!!

Tue 20 === Same above

Web 21 === I met a orthopedist. After examing X-ray of knees he said
that due to over-exercise my knee appeared to become weak, and said
that I should STOP sports. Afterwards I ate pills.

Thr 22 === I ate pills and I did stretching right before sleep.
Fri 23 === I ate pills and I did stretching right before sleep.
Sat 24 === I ate pills and I did stretching right before sleep.

I felt my injuries are cured a little, but still I walked limping but
not much before.

Sun 25 === I tried to run a little, but I felt some pain when left
foot touches ground, and

(1) I realized that left foot always touches its front part first.
(2) Still it was difficult for me to hop on only left leg.

Mon 26 ===
Tue 27 === A little progress.
Wed 28 ===
Thr 29 === I met the doctor again and said that my left leg was
shortened.

After examing hip X-ray, he ordered me to put the left leg over the
right leg (putting left shin over right knee) sitting in a chair.
Doing this I felt some pain on the left femur. It was very difficult
mission for me. Let's name it __leg_cross_mission__.

He said that I got the stress fracture on the left femur at the femur
neck, pinpointing a line, a fracture, in some area in the X-ray.
(Eventhough I could not see any lines) I received pills(7-days), the
same ones, I received a week before.

Fri 30 === A little progress
Sat 31 === A little progress

April

Sun 1 === A little progress.

Tue 3 === progress. I can hop using only left leg, can walk not
limping.

Wed 4 === More and more I can walk not limping. I almost come back to
normal condition, almost fully recovered. However I felt somewhat
feeling on the area of the femur head, which is located in the
leftmost part of the left hip, and that feeling started about 3 days
before. I dont know it is pain or not, just uncomfortable feeling.
Still the __leg_cross_mission__ is difficult for me.

Mon 2 === I came to know from internet that stress fracture of femur
neck is a very serious injury, and met again the doctor. He said that
let's wait until Friday, the day I ate up all the pills.

Thr 5 === Doctor said he think he did whatever he can do, that even
though he suspected stress fracture, now he can not say definitely it
was a SF because X-ray images usually do not contain much information,
and when I said to take another X-ray to see SF line, he said that it
is waste of money. Finally after taking hip X-rays he said that he can
see lines on femur neck of the BOTH legs. (However I could not see
that lines, and there was no pain at all on the right leg). He did not
mention about MRI or bond scan. I made an appointment to meet him next
Thr.

Fri 6 === While I did lots of massages on every part of the left leg
using left hand, I felt no acute pain anywhere. And I feel some
uncomfortable feeling at the area from the femur top(bent location) to
the half of the femur. Somewhat 1/4 part of left femur, upper and
outer part. I feel that feeling sitting in a chair, while it weaks
when I walk.

Still the __leg_cross_mission__ is difficult.

I can put easily left calf over right knee lying on the bed, making
'4' shape. However from this when I tried to get up I feel pain on the
femur neck. (The top part of the femur)
