The article linked above is interesting, but I'd like to see
studies done with people taking simple salt tablets throughout a
race in hot conditions! Many people who've tried them in ultras
(or even in shorter runs on very hot days) can attest that salts
definitely help you keep up with a high sweat rate far better
than water or sports drink alone.
Serum osmolality is not the issue being addressed by glycerin
loading. The goal of GL is more efficient processing of water.
In theory, ingestion of glycerin will pre-load the body with extra
water that becomes available as the athlete sweats. Yes, this
water can also be replaced by drinking, but passing water through
the digestive system diverts blood from the muscles.
If the water is already present in the system through glycerin
binding, the effect may be closer to that of getting an IV
injection. I believe Dean Karnazes experimented with IVs during a
run and found them to be very effective.
