exercise induced asthma?

This is the first time in my life that I've really pushed my endurance
levels with cardio like bike riding, running, and working out on my
elliptical. One of the things that has always held me back since a kid was
early into any type of strenuous activity I would feel exhausted. My lungs
hurt, and I couldn't catch my breath. My heart would race. I could never
keep up with the other kids and I was always slow.
My recent efforts have brought to my attention what seems to be my "weak
link". When I work out, I feel like I can't breath. I feel like I can't
take a full deep breath. I do not feel like this except at times of real
exercise. When I try to breathe deep, it feels shallow and I just don't
feel like I get any air. Sometimes I get a whistle sound when I breath. Is
this possibly asthma?
To me this would be such a breakthrough on why I can never seem to "keep
up", even when I think I'm in pretty good shape.
Obviously I will be seeking info from my doctor, but I was wondering if
anyone has experience with this.
Betsy
