Sore foot / shoe size.

Hi,
Have read this group a fair bit, never posted. So hello.
I'm training for my second marathon. My normal mileage would be around
20 miles/week. On my 1st marathon I just wanted to finish so speed
wasn't an issue. This time I'd like to run faster. This I am training 5
times a week, my LSD was 12 miles on Saturday.
The weekly runs I am going/intend to do are: rest, speed/hill work
(with club), short (4-6 mile) run, marathon race or faster pace 8-10
mile(mostly with club), rest, long run, recovery run (join my club for
social sunday run but keep it very slow).
Thing is after an 8 mile pace run last Thursday, I've had a sore foot &
toe. I remember having the same thing last time round. It only appears
when I increase the pace, so last time round I just forgot about trying
to push the pace at all. I had to take a week off my training and then
I made sure not to run to fast.
It's sore on my left foot, running down on the top along the line down
to my big toe, starting at around the highest part of the arch. (the
arch isn't sore it's the top side of the foot mainly.) It is sore to
walk/put pressure on the 'ball?' part of the foot near the big toe.
Until the other day I guessed that running faster meant more pressure
on the foot, therefore more likelyhood of injury. Now I'm wondering if
the problem might be as simple as wearing too small shoes. If I run
longer & faster do my feet spread out more? Can anyone spread some
light?
I have small wide feet which is what makes me think this could be the
problem. I'm 5'11", 14st, 33yr, Male. My last 10K time was 46:00. I run
in Asics Kayano's. It's Monday night and I haven't run since Saturday
afternoon and most of the discomfort has left me today.
Pace ~= 8 min / mile
LSD ~= 9:20 min/mile
Many Thanks,
Jonny
