Nope, I have to skip it again.....but good reason....again. Seems
Hubby was invited to be the "Solar Expert" for an eclipse tour in
Eggyt in late March. Can't miss an opportunity like that. Of course,
I have to pay but that's okay. Two weeks in Egypt, first week along
the Mediterranean to see the total solar eclipse, one week sailing
down the Nile to see the ancient sites.

Wow, that makes me jealous. I am a bit of an amateur astronomer, having gone through a few refractors and a schmidt-cassegrain in the past 8 years or so. Currently I am without a scope, and I miss skywatching.

I never did any looking at the sun, with those special lenses
you attach and all that, but I'm sure it's awesome. I am a
fan of Jupiter and Saturn, and spent a lot of time viewing
both planets over the years.

cheers,

Welll, if you ever get down Tucson way, we have a rather large assortment of telescopes to visit, including the McMath-Pierce, the world's largest solar telescope. Claude happens to be the site manager so I'm sure an inside tour could be arranged. We have a few ourselves, a 6" refractor, an 8" SCT, a 10" Newt, and a 16" Dob. Which we only use now and then due to the fact that we both get up really early!
I remember thinking about a Dob - best bang for the buck, for sure,
even if you need a garage to store it. :-)

I wish I had the $$ to own your gear! I loved my 102mm (4")
refractor more then my SC - it was my favorite scope for
planetary viewing. If I get another one, I will probably go for
a refractor again.

ahhh!! Now it's all making sense. :-)

cheers,

Ayup. He works for the Nat'l Solar Observatory at Kitt Peak, I work for the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona. (My group is building instrumentation for the Large Binocular Telescope- the beam combiner, an infrared camera, and a nulling interferometer). We've collected the amateur telescopes over many decades and all of them were bargains. Come on down sometime and we'll pull one or two out and do some "gazing"!
