One of the things I have learned from 25 years of running is to NEVER run
through an injury that is severely painful. Yes, there are pains that you
can run through and they will go away. But those are generally of the
"ache" and "twinge" and "cramp" variety, not anything that anyone would
describe as "pretty severe".
The general rule for serious injuries -- and what you are describing here
sounds pretty serious to me -- is to (1) take time off. The first thing an
injured body part wants is rest, in order to heal. That may mean a day, a
week, a month, even, in some cases, a year or more. At some point, in order
for the healing to continue, you must progress to (2) gentle movement.
Walking is gentle movement. Running and weight-lifting are not. Finally,
you begin to re-introduce running, a little at a time. A typical way to do
it is to walk/run, gradually increasing the amount of running until you have
once again resumed being able to do the amount of running you want to do.
In this particular case, it sounds as though you need some surgery. You are
probably going to have to bite the bullet, get the surgery, take the
necessary time off your feet and then go through the healing process. The
longer you keep running through severe pain, the worse you are making the
problem and the more likely it becomes that you will turn temporary injuries
into permanent changes, i.e., permanent painful problems.
