What happened to the ride inside? I guess they castrated
it like they did Journey Into Your Imagination?

As long as you are splitting semantic hairs, you may as well get this
correct: From the time EPCOT opened, until the '99 re-do, the name
was always Journey into Imagination. The word "Your" has never been
part of the name.

Presently, the pavilion is named "Imagination!".

Actually, you're also incorrect.

The ride-through attraction inside the Imagination pavilion has been known
by three names: "Journey Into Imagination", "Journey Into Your Imagination"
and "Journey Into Imagination with Figment".

While Wikipedia is never the end-all-and-be-all source of information, it's
got the basic timeline correct:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_Into_Imagination
(Note that the version that was "Journey Into Your Imagination" lasted
exactly 2 years)

As for the dome, that was the part of the ride where you emerged from
the twisting ride up thru the centuries of communications progress, to
where the cars tipped backwards and you had a view of the Earth from
an outer space distance, as projected onto the dome at the top of
Spaceship Earth. Best part of the whole ride.

The entire Spaceship Earth structure is referred to as a "geosphere". It was
the first of its kind in the world, so Disney created a new name. Up until
it was built, they didn't know how to build an entire sphere. The most that
had been built were 3/4 (or maybe it was 9/10) of a complete sphere. All of
those partial spheres are also referred to as being geodesic domes. It
wasn't until someone came up with the idea of lifting the sphere off the
ground on pylons that they were able to build the entire sphere. In fact,
the lowest portion of the sphere hangs down off of the rest of the
structure.

Inside the geosphere is housed the ride-through Spaceship Earth attraction.
("Spaceship Earth" can be used to refer both to the structure as well as the
ride inside it) At the very top of the ride, the designers left it open to
the roof of the geosphere, creating a planetarium to project stars. While
yes, it's a dome, it's just the top-most part of the overall sphere.

As for the attraction, the first 2/3 of it has been left mostly unchanged
since it opened in 1982. New narration has been introduced over the years,
some warning video screens were added in the ascent tube, but that's about
it. The only portion that has changed is a short section before the
starfield that depicts the present and near-future, and then the backwards
descent after the starfield.
The current refurb that starts on Monday will again change this final
section of the attraction and will also include a new on-ride narration and
musical score. It's also been said that they will at least be touching up
all of the other scenes, though it appears that it'll just be minor tweaks,
like new props, costumes, perhaps newer animatronics, effects, lighting,
etc.
