Best OT post ever. Saved me $25 a month!
Plus, the whole thing went down exactly as you said it would, except
for one rather funny thing:
When I told the operator I wanted to take advantage of the new free
access plan because I now have optimum online and can't justify paying
twice for internet (but also didn't want to lost my screen name as a 7
year member of AOL), he put me on hold for about 2 minutes.
He came back acting as though he knew about the offer, but that he was
not able to offer it to me because he didn't know that it was available
yet. I told him a "friend" took advantage of this very offer yesterday
and was granted the offer with little to no questioning. He said what
they could offer was a $10.95 per month plan that would allow me 6
minutes of dial up access per month, along with all of the other
benefits.
I called his bluff and told him that I wanted to cancel the plan
altogether, because paying twice for internet is crazy. He put me back
on hold. Or so he thought he did.
In the backround, instead of hold music, I heard him talking- not to a
supervisor, but to himself. "I lost another one- damnit!" 20 seconds
later, he came back on stating that because I was such a loyal AOL
member that his supervisor granted my request, because they wanted to
keep me happy if I ever left optimum's range and needed a different
high speed provider.
AMAZING@!$@!
Bottom line, AOL is in big trouble, with all of the free mail services
out there like yahoo and hotmail. They are finding that they may as
well offer the same service for free if you're not using AOL to access
the web in the first place.
I did get the spiel regarding no customer support, etc, etc.
Bottom line- thanks for the tip!
