Getting Free Agent to cooperate with SBCs newsserver is a maddening
experience! I've gotten many "authentication required" msgs as well as
"rrc is not carried by the host." Agent help says that
"authentication..." usually means a user name and password is required
but SBC's "customer NO-service" reps in Malaysia or Phillipines or
whever my call happens to get routed know nothing about this issue. At
best I've been told a password should not be required to use the
server. I tried creating a user name & password which failed, too.
Agent has gotten much more user-friendly over the years but I still
find myself scratching my head when it comes to configuration with a
new server. I've done the setup wizard steps but still can't connect
via SBC.
Does anyone here use SBC with Free agent? If so, let's talk!
I don't have your particular configuration, but on my own news program,
there's a setting, "always authenticate" that handles a similar problem
for me. Essentially, SBC's news server is probably asking for a
password each time Agent contacts it. There's probably an Agent setting
that allows it to automatically send this password each time without
bothering you about it. So look for a setting like that.
There is one. I remember having to select it a year or three back when
Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic, hence my e-mail address, since I'm
grandfathered in with that address, if I choose to be) switched to
requiring authentication for use of its news servers. They made this
switch to try to stop spammers from hijacking their servers to post spam
all over usenet. Apparently, a lot of news servers now require
authentication.
As for Agent, you can set the login authentication in "Servers and
Accounts" under the Tools drop-down menu in the taskbar. In the news
servers folder in the tree in the window on the left, click on the specific
news server that you have entered. On the right is a the option for login
method. I believe that the default option is "no login is required".
Change that to either "username and password" or "secure password
authentication", depending on what your server required. (You'll probabaly
have to test them out yourselves, till you find something that works.) Then
you can put in your username and password. These will most likely be your
username and password with your internet provider. If that doesn't work,
you'll probabaly have to try to find these answers from your internet
provider.
And good luck with that! So few internet users now use or even know about
usenet that most people who work the help desk lines don't even know what
it is, never mind be able to help you with it! The last time I tried to
get help from Verizon about news servers, they had no idea what I was
talking about, and put me through with their web page development help
desk! I'd suggest telling them to look in their databases for keywords
like "usenet", "newsgroups", "login" and "authentication". You might have
to spell usenet for them! Hopefully, with that info, even the least
knowledgeable help desk people can help you, even if it just means reading
from a page. (That's what they usually do, anyways!)
If your internet provider has a good online help database, you can probably
find the answers you need faster than they will. And you won't have to
wait on the phone for an hour, either! ;-)
