I dropped a note to Charlie Jacques, Jr. regarding the Kennywood Pool
closing questions we had the other day... Here's his answer:
"The pool closed because of segregation. But it did reopen and remained
reopened until they closed it. Maintenance was always an issue with the
pool. It leaked from the day it was built, and as pool usage decline in the
1950s the maintenance became more of an issue. If you look at pools the
1950s and 1960s were big integration issues. Many just closed their pools.
Coney Island finally intergrated in 1961."
So I guess if it was leaking from day one - sounds like segregation was the
issue.
