chips
Samsung is a consumer products manufacturer first and foremost... and
substantially vertically integrated. Samsung's first goal is to create
for its own products, then sell them. iBiquity wants as many different
companies manufacturing receivers as possible. Anyone can license the
technology and make chips.
HD radio has been around for about 5 years. Why didn't TI get around to
developing the chips years ago?
If you were about to commit engineers and money, would you do it for an
unlicensed service that might change, or not be approved. Nobody important
in radio and component manufacturer made any significant commitment to HD
prior to the FCC approval just months ago.
Conceptually, HD goes back to the work done at AT&T Labs and Lucent more
than 15 years ago... but it has only been approved for about 6 months, so
the start date for all practical purposes was earlier this year. Companies
like Samsung wanted FCC approval as well as an installed base of stations
covering a significant portion of the US... at present, there is HD coverage
of about 70% of the country, and virtually all the "good" facilities in the
top 100 markets are on... that alone represents nearly two-thirds of the US
population.
