Re: OT: Jack fails @ WCBS-FM, back to oldies

Did anyone ever actually figure out what the format of JACK - FM was
supposed to be?? No matter when I tuned in --- there was never any
"same type of music" playing. I heard at one time they were targeting
males 25-40ish, But even that seemed very hard to prove - as I could
never get a handle on the genre of music they were playing.

Specifically, by design, JACK-FM was not narrowed into a genre. As an import from a couple of college kids with a local license in Canada, JACK was created to be 'playing what we want...' meaning anything and everything. At least anything and everything that these two college kids liked.

As it caught on, JACK became more formatted. In fact, the Hollander brothers committed a large block of resources to 'format' and fine tune JACK...which, no surprise, was contrary to the very purpose of JACK.

It
actually seemed as though the station - in my area anyways, had been
taken over - with very little money - so they were just playing
whatever was "in the stacks". But last time I checked - CBS had a lot
of funds so that can't be it. And why on earth would anyone think
loosing Dick Biondi was a good thing -- when he has a very loyal and
very estabished listener base, was a puzzle to me??

You're failing to take into account the invincible ignorance of Les and Joel Hollander...who both, at the time of the switch berated the listeners of WJMK for their 'outdated' and 'antique' listening tastes. Les saying that no matter what you do in the business someone's going to be putting their boot on your neck, so we're just going to do this, and to hell with anyone that doesn't like it.

Jack in Chicago plays what the Hollander brothers' research chooses to play. And by being jockless most of the day, the decline in ratings is more than offset by the savings in salaries.

Remember: It's Radio in the US...it's always about the bottom line. CBS could have every known dollar in the Universe....it doesn't matter. They'd continue to do what they do as expenseless as possible.

What's the game plan now?? Do you think they will go back to the
oldies format - because now at least in this market - there are two
new stations - one FM and one AM that have taken that over. And I
don't think JACK will have held on to those oldies listeners.

The likelihood of WJMK returning to Oldies 104 is slim. For now, at least, Jack is producing positive cash flow. Until and unless that changes, or Dan Mason makes and executive decision to un-JACK, things will continue. Mason's first declaration when taking over the radio division was to return autonomy to the local manglers and Program Directors. So, the chance of an executive order coming out of Blackrock is slim.
