Cato responds: It was things like that, that I spoke up against at
my last"Peace" movement meeting, after I had changed my whole outlook.
The last one in particular I was lucky to get out of without having a
beating put me in the hospital or worse.
At this particular meeting there were all kinds of speeches by our
local socialists, and communists. And these were people that I knew
quite well, from activist, organizing days, my time in their "camp", I
guess you could say.
Anyways, I know very well what I could be in for, but I decided to
do it anyways. The speaker at the time was a Communist party member
who I was well aware did some under the table work passed on to him
through several layers of""comrades" from very high up and took orders
from higher up. He was a "loyal comrade."
His speech basically was an attack on N.A.T.O. countries.
Especially, the U.S., Britain, France, West Germany, and since we
(meaning me and my fellow countrymen) live in Canada, it was also a
verbal attack on Canada's involvement in NATO. Including the way we
allowed the U.S. to test cruise missiles in our far north. Alowed
Germany to train troops in our west. And Germany to fly jet fighters
in training out of Goose Bay.
The big attack came when he went on and on about the U.S. OHIO
class nuclear submarines. He talked about their huge size, and the
number of missiles with MIRV warheads they could carry.
You have to remember, by this time I had already left them, and
become a freedom loving Canadian. Pro U.S., pro NATO, anti-communist.
I was against anything that smelled of totalitarianism by that time.

So I stood up among all these people when he was done his
propagandizing, and I launched into an attack on him, and everyone
else in the room. (I was in a room full of anti-U.S., anti-NATO
leftwingers, with some sincere unknowing people that wouldn't know
what was involved here. All the would know was that it was a meeting
for "Peace".
I raised the point that they called themselves, peace lovers, but
never criticised the U.S.S.R, or the Warsaw Pact for their weapons
systems and their actions in the third world, installing communist
governments wherever they could. All answering to Moscow of course. I
talked about the Soviet "TYPHOON" Submarine, and mentioned that it was
the biggest in the world, quite a bit bigger then the OHIO, and
carried more missiles. I asked "Why don't you talk about that??" How
come you never mention the build-up of military strength in the soviet
Union abd its allies.?? I of course knew the answers, I just wantd to
see and hear if they would admit it out loud. There might be a few
reporters in the hall. It was packed.
At this point some people were starting to yell at me to shut up
and sit down. I went on.
I pointed out that many their brochures, and information to hand
out was printed in Moscow, Havana, and other Communist countries, The
ones that were printed here were printed by "Front" organizations.
Commie propaganda - "The Soviet Union and it's friends the "Peace
Loving Progressive Peoples" of the World just want peace. The western
Imperialist reactionaries led by the U.S., are dangerous war mongers.
Pushing the world closer to nuclear war, and the destruction of the
world. The survivors will envy the dead."
Do you remember those years??? I proceeded to say some nasty
stuff, and by this time many people were yelling and shouting at me,
and trying to drown me out. I know the tactic well. They were trying
to see if I would make a mistake in judgment, and then it would get
violent, and of course the violent actions would be my fault, and they
would only be "Defending themselves" while I would get the crap beaten
out of me.

I had to know how far I could "Push It", without going to far.
Plus at this point I started to chicken out a bitl. I figured that I
had said what I had come to say, and that I was getting close to, "the
edge" and sat down.
That was my last "Peace Movement " meeting that I intended. They
knew what side of the fence I was on now. And it wasn't their side
anymore.
