I'm in my 50s and I've seen quite a few real outhouses on farms and
campgrounds.

I'm just 51, and I have lived (in my teens, no less) in a place with only an
outhouse (a small house in Richfield, Utah) that also had no electrical
outlets (we had a hanging bulb in each room, and had to use screw-in
adapters to plug anything in). I also lived in a large farmhouse in Orem,
Utah where we did have indoor plumbing, but our heat was a coal fireplace
and we had a coal burning stove in the kitchen (we had an electric stove,
too... but the coal was used more than once during the frequent electric
outages). The fireplace was a 'wrap-around' type that heated the entire
house (sort of) but mainly the livingroom and main bedroom. The house was 2
story and had no heat at all upstairs, where our (the kids) bedrooms were.
Also, in 1963, we lived in a 'town' in Montana (Elk Park) with only a house,
combination restaurant/bar/post office and a burned out garage. The
restaurant was long closed, the house had only potbelly stoves for heat and
wood stove for cooking. I can't remember anymore what we had for water, as I
was all of 8 year old at the time. Fun times for a kid, though. How many
people would or could live that way now?

Brenda, you would be both amazed and appalled by the living
conditions of the thousands of homeless people living in the Ocala
National Forest. Some are people down on their luck, but a lot of them
are mentally ill veterans who were ignored when they first asked for
help in the '60s and '70s. Now they area afraid of anyone who they don't
know. the last time they had a head count it was over 2000 men and
women who were Veterans in need of help. We had arranged a medical
stand down this spring, but the whole thing fell apart when the medical
team's large truck blew the engine, so we are trying to reschedule it.
The problem is that once again these people were promised help that they
didn't get and we've lost what trust they had for us. :(

As far as farm life goes, the last time I was there I was 13, and
there for my Grandmother's funeral. It was right after school let out
for the summer in 1966. The funeral was held in an old wooden church
that was supposed to be over 100 years old. It had electricity, but no
indoor plumbing as far as I can remember.

the older parts of my grandparents home were surface wired with those
brown bakelight switches, sockets and outlets. The newer kitchen was
built after the road was electrified, and had the wiring in the wall. I
remember being there for a weekend when a storm blew in and hit the HV
power lines a couple miles away. they were the last farm with
electricity on the dirt road, and there was no lightning protection on
the old REA wiring. The lightning traveled to the end of the line and
arced to the 120 secondary, went into the house and blew an outlet out
of the wall as it turned into ball lightning. Quite a sight for a young
kid who wanted to know how everything worked! :)
