I spent (13) months there way before it became a large base in the mid 70's. We were able to visit the entire island checking out the older side. The island at one time was a prison where England sent their undesirables to live and produce copra(?sp). In the medical clinic there was till meds in bottles,etc. Later in the they completly closed off that side of the island. As a 19 yearold right out of radio school it
was fantastic place to be, for about 4 months then the heat, sand, nothing to do would get to you, we worked 12On/12Off for most the time.
