WHAT?
Subject: THE HISTORY OF FASCISM
In the early 20th century, fascism swept across central and eastern Europe
and eventually dominated the governments of Spain, Italy and Germany and
gained adherents in the United States, Argentina, South Africa and Japan.
Though the fascist governments of Mussolini, Franco and Hitler differed
greatly, each was characterized by their extreme militarism, contempt for
democracy, and a belief in the rule of elites--all characteristics that made
them some of the most brutal and murderous regimes the world has ever seen.
....we examine the evolution of fascism from World War I to World War II with
two historians: STANLEY PAYNE, professor of history at the University of
Wisconsin Madison and an expert in the history of fascism, and PETER
FRITZSCHE, professor of history at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign and an expert on the rise of fascism in Germany.
