Re: Noise Shut Me Down

I have a crackling buzzing sound that popped up a few weeks ago. It started
intermittently but now it is going constant and stronger that ever. This
interference shows up on all the HF bands but is strongest around 20 meters
where last night I logged a healthy 40 over 9, affectively shutting me down
on my favorite band.

I did my homework yesterday and took what steps I could. I turned off all
the power at the main breaker box to my house and walked around with a
portable AM radio that uses a ferrite rod built in. The noise still showed
up on the AM radio, so I've ruled out any possible source from inside my
house. Since the little portable AM radio's ferrite rod works
directionally, I decided to take a stroll outside around the house with it.
The interference gets loudest right underneath the power line which runs
right beside my house. I followed this line down the street, radio in hand
(looking pretty dorky), and the noise seems to be radiating from a bunch of
different points/transformers along the same line.

I just put in a call to Pedernales Electric Company this morning and they
are sending a lineman tommorrow to meet with me. I can only hope that the
noise doesn't magically stop when he arrives!

Wish me luck! And any suggestions are welcome.

Possibly a bad lightning arrestor, happens around here from time to time. Good
luck, hopefully you have a cooperative power company as I do here.
