Hello.
I personally have owned three Sangean-made radios. All have been
disappointments. The Sangean CCRadio is inferior in performance to the
GE Superadio series, the Sangean ATS-808A lasted only about three years
before it took its (final) trip to the landfill, and my Sangean
ATS-606AP has been "retired" as it is obvious that its computer
circuitry is starting to "go." In my experience and opinion, Sangean
products have mediocre design and build-qualities.
Also, no Sangean product offers a synchronous detection circuit. I can
practically guarantee you that once you have experienced SW listening
with this circuit, you will never go back to "straight AM."
I personally own five of the Sony 7600 series - two ICF-SW7600G's and
three ICF-SW7600GR's. (I also own two Sony ICF-SW35's.) My oldest
'7600G was purchased in 1998 and is still "going strong," as are all
the other Sony's.
If you are in the market for a small portable SW radio, I strongly
suggest that you buy a Sony ICF-SW7600GR right NOW while the "getting
is good."
Doubtless they are going to discontinue their entire shortwave line as
it appears that no one in the Sony "higher-ups" has any interest in
shortwave whatsoever.
But they haven't discontinued them yet - so NOW is the time to buy one!
Believe it or not, you can buy the (superior) Sony ICF-SW7600GR for
LESS money than the (inferior, in my opinion) Sangean PT-80.
Best,
Joe
