The "alive" part Roy mentioned I agree with. I'm not so sure about the
"well" part, but that's just my bias I guess.

You can always use Google to check activity on a group. Well, not ALL
groups, but lots of them. To post through Google, you need to log in,
but you can read groups without doing that.
