We're not the only ones arguing about this. I read that 2 lasers pointed
at each other 180 degrees out of phase causes darkeness (cancellation).
What happens to the energy? I have found no simple answer, yet. We may
need to rely on the 'dark physics' for an explanation. Here is a very
interesting post on the energy cancellation topic from PhysOrg forum:
"First off, let me thank you for calling my attention to the way I worded
my thoughts about phase cancellation, I agree with you about the fact you
cannot destroy energy. The point I was attempting to make was that phase
cancellation when applied to an electromagnetic wave appears to me to
violate the law of the conservation of energy. If an electromagnetic wave
does not need a medium to travel through such as was originally thought
when the aether was conceived then can we apply phase cancellation the
same as we see it in other wave propagations such as waves on water or
sound waves? For waves to exist in a body of water (the body of water the
medium for which the waves will travel) energy is transferred directly to
the water to create the waves and the same holds true for sound waves as
well, energy is directly transferred to the medium in which the sound
waves will travel which in turn creates the waves. For these two examples
phase cancellation happens within the medium itself. For instance, when a
sound wave cancels the air in which the wave is traveling has the high and
low pressure wave fronts which equalize pressure canceling the waves.
How can this hold true for an electromagnetic wave experiencing phase
cancellation which has no medium? My experiments are leading me to the
idea that these waves are coupling. Not only that but the coupled waves
will exist as a stationary coupled wave. These coupled waves exist more
like a particle than a wave, they appear to have the three dimensional x,y
and z coordinates associated with particles. Continued coupling appears to
be taking place. They appear to develop spin possibly due to electric
charge.
These experiments remind me of dark energy and maybe I have found its
source. I have to wonder if there really is a medium in which
electromagnetic waves travel through."

Even more interesting is the author's web site. It actually relates much to
what has been discussed thus far in classical terms. You can look for chinks
and I'm sure you will find them but I know his fundamentals are true. This
guy has an intersting vision to say the least:
