As those who make BP have been saying, the normal color for BP (not
charcoal) after milling is a dark gray. Here is a link to a picture of
a 100 gram batch from a small mill. The half on the left is right out
of the mill. The half on the right is the same batch as the left but
it has been moistened. It will be darker than the stuff on the left
even when it dries.

Fargo also mentioned that commercial powders are blackened even more
by a graphite coating.

You are on the right track... Now make it go Foop! when you light it.
You do that by using a reactive charcoal and milling it properly.
