daytime shells ?

I remember seeing shells before that had three colors of chalk or
dust.they must have been to test wind direction.but they were really
neat and the crowds loved them,they launched them every hour untill
dusk and had yellow,red and green " puffs"together in one burst.how
would one go about duplicating these.are the colors some kind of fast
smoke comp or merely powder bags?
