We have four different kinds of sporge/spam here, and I doubt that any
one person could possibly be the author of them all. The styles differ
too much.
1. There are seemingly nonsense or gibberish posts, in which some sort
of computerized writing generator is employed to select words in an
order that makes a formally correct sentence (i.e., with subject,
object, articles, prepositions, modifiers) but one that communicates
no meaning. I'm reminded by some of these of the great cryptographer
of the Renaissance, Johannes Trithemius, whose work "Steganographia"
contained just such lists of words, which could be assembled to convey
a hidden message within a mass of seemingly meaningless verbiage. If
these posts are steganographic they could only make sense to someone
who has the same wordlist that the generator uses. They may be
steganographic or they may be just mischievous nonsense. In any event,
these appear to come from one source.
2. There are the paranoid rants about MI5. These appear to come from
another source. Sources 1 and 2 have sporged many groups, not just
rec.pyrotechnics.
3. We have one or more persons, posting under fictitious names, who
specialize(s) in defamatory or derisive posts, many of which have been
directed towards Harry, but also from time to time against other
regular posters. He or they seldom if ever post(s) anything relevant
to the group's topic either as OP or in response. I do not believe
that he or they has or have common identity with the above two. This
person or one of these persons may be the same as
4. The self-styled "Group Moderator" who began showing up after Harry
suggested that perhaps what we need to do in reponse to sporgers/
spammers 1 through 3 is to start a moderated newsgroup for
recreational pyrotechnics. Sources 3 and 4 appear to confine their
posts to rec.pyrotechnics, although one who has obtruded his 9/11
conspiracy theories on this group has made similar posts on a number
of other newsgroups.
It is obvious that neither sources 1 nor 2 have any good will towards
the purpose of this group or any other to which they have posted huge
volumes of irrelevant and irritating trash. Sources 3 and 4 are
distinct from these in professing some higher purpose in attacking
other posters, but their lack of good will towards the group is
evident in that they never post anything that is of practical use or
interest on the subject of recreational pyrotechnics. Their sole
purpose is insult and defamation.
The originators of sporge types 1 and 2 have something more than the
'mind of a 9-year old' even if it is one that must either be quite mad
or quite devious. As for types 3 and 4, the 9-year old analogy is spot-
on. Their posts are little better than the taunts one might hear at a
grammar school playground.

Mike, just as an afterthought, I suspect that after starting it, this

Mike, I full agree with your rather thought out analysis, and I am
arare that some these diruptive posts target other newsgroups, but
nothing so bad as what is happened here. The major perp does not
target individuals in particular, but disrupts the entire newsgroup.
I enjoyed your comments concerning possible cryptographic content, and
I have considered this as a possibility. Then I lost interest in this
pursuit, having only a slightly more than casual interest in that
subject. For those wishing to learn about traditional codes and
cyphers, the Aegean Park Press offers an amazing number of books on
this subject, which range from the elementary to the most
sophisticated. I believe that they have a website.
Now is the sponge is indeed some sort of cryptic communication? If
so, it no doubt employs a one-time key, a pad, which is related to
time and date. This is very similar to the codes that many of us have
learned in the military. These are not the same sort of cyphers that
an embedded spy in the field would use for rather obvious reasons
(code books and other physical evidence). If suffices to say that one
time key cryptography is nearly impossible to decode, again for
obvious reasons, unless you have the "pad".
I really don't believe that the spam consists of concealed messages.
I believe it is simply a product of pure hate and malice from a
seriously disturbed individual, or individuals, who for some bizarre
reason hate fireworks.
