This link pretty well tells the story of "why":
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/11/29/fbi.botnets/index.html
Just received my "Norton Internet Security 2008" disk. It's athorized
for the protection of 3 computers in a home, and costs roughly $60.
I've been using the same line of products for the past 3 years, and
since their installation, I've been free from viruses and none of my
computer is a "botnet" zombie.
Readers of rec.pyrotechnics have experienced what a botnet can do in
the way of a denial of services attack, so it is a serious problem.
Unfortunately, attacks like this will be possible until the perps are
captured and convicted, because so many computers remain unprotected
from becoming active participants in the crime.
I'm not paid to promote Norton products, but for me they work very
well, are updated automatically nearly daily, and do a good job of
periodically "scrubbing" your computer. Freeware, by contrast, is
totally ineffective. You get what you pay for!
Something to think about.

Come on Joe,
This place looks like Stalingrad in 1942.
You want to talk Miss Manners, and then say "bull***"?
Some of us are still fighting, you're pinching boots!
If this place falls I hope you have another "haunt".
I miss the banter, the "pull my finger" without gettin' sniffed at.
Back "on topic".
I'm lost on the place that has all the spyware and crosslinks stored
on the hard drive.
The place that when you turn on the pc you have to wait for the "dust
to settle".
ms- something, that dark place that few tread.
Norton's let outfits mine that area, to an extent.
As JEB says.
Lesser of 2 evils.
Everybody sing!!!
Put the "Rec" back in wreck pyro!
