I have a decision to make here: I need to decide between purchasing 1

make some nice blue stars so does anyone have any reccomendations on
which on has better results using potassium perchlorate as the
oxidizer? Im sure this was brought up before but upon searching i
could only find 1 thread with no definative answer.
Thanks,

If it were a choice between copper oxide and copper carbonaate, I
would go with Auriga's recommendation and go with the (black) oxide
(as long as it's of high purity). Some European manufacturers use the
red copper oxide in purple compositions with strontium carbonate but I
don't think it's used much here in the USA. Copper oxychloride is
another great blue salt and has a lot of fans. I use mostly chlorate
stars and my preference for a deep blue is black copper oxide with
Saran resin or HCB and shellac or lactose in the chlorate mixes. If
you need a faster burning star, the Shimizu mix using red gum and
Parlon is good. Some of the Japanese exhibition blues still use a
potassium chlorate, copper sulfate and sulfur star which many would
consider too sensitive to use. Paris green is still used in Japan by
some high quality makers and is easier to get there than here, but
with the right formulation and pure chemicals, any of those copper
salts can give a very good color.
