I know the "G" in FG powders signifies a graphite coat, but what make
a powder FA? It would just be BP without any coating or polish? Also,
wouldn't FG powders work well for lift?
I didn't know that! I guess the "A" stands for "absent" graphite.
;)
BTW... when we're talking about powders, we don't say "A" powders or "G" powders, we say "Blasting (or fireworks) Powders" and "Sporting Powders".
With GOEX, the numbers are expressed differently -- mostly out of tradition, though there's some value in the method to prevent confusion between the types. Blasting grades are expressed with a digit and the "FA" suffix; like, "3FA". Sporting grades are expressed with a series of "F"s, and a lower-case "g"; like, "FFFg".
Not all manufacturers follow this nomenclature, but it certainly makes it immediately apparent which grade you're dealing with; so it's not a bad habit to acquire.
