KP is a good break charge but being the cheap scape that I am I try
and use it conservatively, Mainly for 5 inch and 6 inch shells. If
you are making pattern shells or shells without a lot of star volume,
KP generally breaks it too hard. Making up a batch also uses quite a
bit of Perc.
I like to use BP coated corn cob and for my 4 inch shells I measure
out a volume of burst charge, place it in a paper quaker oats can,
then add about 4 grams of K-benzoate whistle comp. I shake this
together gently to coat the burst charge. I mainly do paper shells
and this generally provides a huge but not too hard of a break. I do
this for one shell at a time to try and minimize the amount of live
compositions I am working with at the same time.
