Actually, that's true in the US where possession of one would
consitute a felony offernse and offer the prospect of very serious
prison time, just as the illegal, unlicense possession of dynamitie or
military explosives carries along with it.

Still, I'n not familiar with the Canadian laws and they sometimes
differ from US and our state laws. Here, even mere possession of any
of these items denotes felonious intent, so the criminal offense
charged now falls somewhere between terrorism and intent to commit
murder. In NJ, this means the NJ State Prison in Trenton, or in NY,
the Ossining Correction Facility (Sing Sing), or perhaps a federal
facility.

Obviously, this has absolutely no connection with fireworks, and quite
likey some deal was cut with this kid to prevernt him from having to
serve prison time on top of his serious injuries. Possibly that deal
included him being required to add some spin to the highly organized
anti-fireworks campaign that evidently exists to fuel the political
ambitions of some candidates. Maybe not, but I suspect Canadian
politicians tend to operate much like their political counterparts
here in the US...and need some cause, no matter how small, on which
expoit as a method of fueling their political ambitions.

Notice how the writer of this article. Kim Westad, is intentionally
spinning the essence of his article far beyond the event that actually
happened to include fireworks. Either he is deluded, stupid, or paid
by political interests to have written this, it seem to me that this
accident would not have happened if safe fireworks made from paper and
cardboard had been available to this clueless kid as a comparatively
safe alternative. He would not have ended up in the hopsital with
brain injuries, and Kim Westad would have had nothing to write about.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems to me that when we
place restrictions on the availability of retail fireworks, it only
encourages kids to make do with far more lethal alternatives. All of
us reading this post realize that making fireworks requires a degree
of skill, but even a total idiot can make a pipebomb from almost any
available ingredients. Restrictions placed on the availability of
chemicals will not alter this fact. Anyone capable of surfing the
Internet, as most kids do, can find alternatives that can be purchased
at every grocery and hardware store. Politicians, unless they are
totally stupid, realize this, but don't give a damn provided that
their desperate and (at least to me) uncaring campaign red herrings
promise to give them a few more votes.

It has alway been amazing to me how low some politicians will sink to
get themselves elected. Evidently, as lack of character and integrity
a a requisite for being elected to public office.

There, I got that off my chest! Flame me unmercifully for saying it.

Harry C.

p.s., Hey guys, when I was still a little kid living in New Jersey
(yes, surprisingly I was once a little kid), since fireworks were
illegal we would throw .22 short cartridges into a bonfire to hear
them pop! After doing this safely for some time, the flying bullet
from one of these cartridges hit a friend of mine in the head.
Fortunately, when not fired from a gun, they have only a limited
velocity, so it only gave him a flesh wound, and he was released from
the hospital after only an overnight stay. Still, could a pack of 20
Chinese firecrackers have done this? No, I really don't think so!
M80s are quite something else, but they have long been illegal here in
the US for very good reasons. M80s are unsafe to put into the hands of
laymen, but that is precisely what the anti-firworks laws in NYC
accomplish. Worse still, laymen who have been drinking!

Guess what? Pipe bombs already are illegal, and for a reason!

I see no link between a home-made explosive device and fireworks... be
the same reasoning he could just have said: "i nearly blew my head off
with a pipe bomb, we should ban action movies" :p
