Farfalle are inserts that are somewhat related to hummers and
tourbillons - they can be made in a range of sizes to fit the size of
shell used.
Generally, take a light-weight tube (this may have to be modified
based
on the size used) that is about four times as long as it is wide
(more
or less will still work), plug one end with clay and then, just above
the clay plug, poke two holes that are opposite of each other and big
enough to insert a bit of blackmatch (or 3/16 Visco or ...). Plug
the
hole with a nail (this from a posting by Mike S - perhaps a brass
nail
if packing metal bearing compositions.).
Pack the tube with BP composition with a metal (+10 to +20) in it -
slower is ok - try for a burn time of three or four seconds and work
up. The metal can be nearly anything but steel, titantium and FeTi

Why not steel? Is iron acceptable?

are
popular. Leave a space at the end for a small salute mix if you wish.
Plug the end of the tube (if using a garnish). Take out the 'nail'.
Insert a piece of blackmatch through the hole. NC slurry the
blackmatch and pull it slightly back through ('grease it in' was
mentioned) leaving one side longer to catch the fire from the burst
and
securely tacked with slurry.

Is the ignition much better with match than with an open hole, a hole
with a NC-bound smear of meal or grain BP, or a pressing of meal? Or
is the match more to give a delay than ignition?

Farfalle do not depend on the holes to give them the spin as much as
the break itself. Which is good since the holes are diametrically
opposed. The holes in the farfalle spew the fire stream that creates
the illusion of butterflies or bow-ties.

Am I to take it that each vent points radially, so as to deliberately
not impart spin? And does the pair of opposed vents really give a
qualitatively different display than a single radial vent would?

Very nice John! Thank you.

Am I seeing that right? Are there some blue stars in the center?

After this discussion I have added these to my to do list!

Jason, the Farfalle I have seen have the inserts in a ring along the
inside of the casing, and the void between the inserts and the flash
bag is filled with small stars.
