I dont have one yet, alot of things I want to do but havnt done it
yet. But from being wittness to numerous IED's over here in Iraq and
seeing the damage (holes) punched thur armour plating. You need to
determine what are trying to protect, and sense you already know with
in a few inches of where a blast will be coming from Im guessing a
rocket press. You can pretty much put things were needed. Now the
whole thing of thicker is better is true, but you can also deflect a
blast of shrapnel to some extent.
I have seen some of the blast sheilds posted on the various sites,
that big flat shield is fine, If I was going to modify it I would have
it split in the center and have the split just below where you would
be looking to the top part of the press.Instead of having one big
sheild of say 2ft wide and 4ft tall have the length cut in half and
make it sort of like the bottom of boat, now you dont need sharp angle
here sort of like this ( or if spliting it is not a option even
angled away like this / would gain you some more protection. The
humvees over here have tons (littlery) of armour on them but they have
learned that that surface area pretty much catches the full blunt of
the force, just a few degrees of surface area angled from the
projected path of a object traveling at 3000 to 4000ft per second can
divert it some and that is what you want.
what I have seen on these press shields is really nice looking but
even though you are protecting your face and upper torso I havent seen
to many that go all the way to the floor to protect your legs.. I
havent seen or read where anyone has had a mis hap or a close call on
their rocket press where the fuel they were compressing did CATO.
Any thoughts??
