The intent is to tie the first stage to the rocket stick but only
loosely so it will blow away when the second stage ignites.

Here is a picture of the rocket in the movie (I just stumbled on it).
It is laying on the desert floor with a strontium motor to the left.
Both are 1 lb tubes. You can see the concept (I think).
