Unfortunately, this problem occurs so often that Symantec has a
special utility that you can download from their website for removing
their products. After I had to use it to get rid of Norton Personal
Firewall, I switched to running only McAfee antivirus, using FireFox
with the java script security plug-ins for browsing, and having
Spy-Bot tea-timer run in the background monitoring any changes to my
registry. Tea timer and McAfee running together have about a 1/6 of
the memory footprint of the previous configuration with Norton.

I'll have to look it up to be sure but as I remember there were specific
issues with the BETA version that had to be dealt with before the install of
IE7 BETA and then the full version also needed the user to download the full
version, save to disc, (My Doc's > my downloaded files for instance). Then
UNINSTALL the version of IE7 you were using and reboot the machine then go
to the saved copy you just got from micro*** and do the install from the
saved file. That did away with several bugs that occurred with an
"overinstall" with the old version still on your machine. Then as soon as
you did the install from the saved location go to windoze update and
download and install the updates. I haven't had any problems other than
sometimes the Adobe Flash Player claims to be absent, but when looking at
the list of browser add-ons it shows up as installed and active.
Now. Who can tell me how to uninstall Norton Systemworks 2005 Premier
edition? Every time I try to uninstall the damn suite it says it has
uninstalled but on reboot it is right back on the machine. Can't access the
Norton "protected recycle bin" and can't install the Systemworks from the
disk to try the uninstall again. Norton has hijacked my machine.
