Hello. I would like some ideas on talking my dad into letting me buy
some chemicals. I'm buying from discountpyro.com. Here's my list:
1 pound air float charcoal: $3.25
1 pound dextrin $3.00
1 pound sulfur: 1.75
1 pound star rolling cores: $0.50

total: $8.50
with shipping fee: +$13.50
It's pretty cheap. I don't know what the shipping charge will be. I
estimate it to be about $5.00 so that puts it at $18.50. Then I have to
scan his licence. I _really_ want to get these chemicals. I know he
likes shells and red/orange/yellow stars. I think you can make that
with these, they're called charcoal stars? I have some money. I just
bought 5 lbs of clay the other day on ebay so that's killing me. thanks
for info
I'll put my two cents in here.
First find a farm supply or feed and seed store and go there and get
agriculture grade KNO3 and sulfur. Then do a google image search for
"black willow" and learn what it looks like and how to identify the
tree. They grow near water like retention ponds creeks, ditches and
about oh every where else go get some, make a retort, and build a ball
mill or buy rock tumbler. Pyro is rather tool and equipment intensive
and if you are serious about it you will need to aquire the equipment.
Make your own charcoal and save your money for the BOOKS this is where
you need to spend your pyro dollars. Info is the most important thing
right now. Besides you are going to need some larger mesh size charcoal
to make charcoal stars.
For now forget about rolling stars and make cut stars they are quicker
and easier. I use a leftover ceramic tile to make cut stars on, just
wet the comp spread it out to desired thickness and cut, I use a metal
straight edge (for painting) to cut, but you could use most any thing.
Charcoal stars should light fairly easly.
check ladykates site for some helpfull info on making charcoal and
every thing else you are talking about.
Have fun and stay safe.

Actually, you don't want any "coarse" charcoal in firedust charcoal
stars. (Skyrockets are a different matter). In a properly formulated
(fuel rich) composition, coarse charcoal such as 40 to 60 mesh will
reach the ground. The rich thick tails come from an excess of "air
floated dust" particle size. It's merely a matter of getting the
charcoal going and letting the oxygen in the ambient air sustain the
burning as the particles peel off from the star during the break
trajectory. Lampblack is a good example. Even though a finely divided
dust, lampblack added to an already fuel rich black powder type
charcoal fire dust star will often burn to the ground. The Chlorate/
Perchlorate and lampblack type "Japanese Star" will also, if not
enough Chlorate/Perchlorate is incorporated.
