I've used the following formula for a nice charcoal effect:

Potassium Nitrate 52
Charcoal (mxd hardwood - AF) 15
Charcoal (mxd hardwood - 80m) 16
Sulfur 7
Dextrin 7
Sodium Bicarb 3

Screen components together well, and granulate before charging into
unchoked 3/4" casings. Best part is that it's cheap.
