NaOH is sold in every hardware store I have been to, and KOH is used in
some Drain cleaners, it is around 95% pure, but also mixed with
aluminum turnings to create a highly exothermic reaction when mixed
with water, first making the water basic, preventing the formation of
the oxide layer, and thus forming Al(OH)3 and liberating H2, then the
Al(OH)3 reacts with the KOH to form [Al(OH)4]- anions and K+ cations.
The heat energy produced greatly aids the breakdown of the obstruction.
I remember the day when I used a Drano (NaOH/Al) solution to remove the
anodizing from an aluminum alloy in my basement, I was lucky the
Hydrogen didnt ignite by means of my natural gas furnace... Anyways,
back on topic, my litttle hardware store in a town of only 5000 people
carries KOH, NaOH, and 44-0-0 fertillizer, so I am quite sure you could
find it if you did a thourough search, considering you probably live in
a larger, more densly populated area. BTW, I am also in Canada.
