Harry,
You can safely fire BB caps in your S&W tip-up. They have NO powder in them -
only priming. CB caps are also considered safe. You can order them from Dixie
Gun Works.
Your revolver will have been chambered for the .22 Short, which was S&W's
invention and is the oldest continuously loaded cartridge still in production.
You should not try to fire current .22 Short ammo in your revolver. I do not
think you will be able to find any .22 Short empty primed brass or black-powder
loaded cartridges in this calibre.
There is much misinformation in print about the relative pressures of smokeless
vis-a-vis black powder. It is NOT true that black powder is necessarily a
low-pressure propellant, nor is it true that smokeless is always unsafe to fire
in an arm designed for black. Sherm Bell has a good continuing series of
articles on this subject in the "Double Gun Journal." Ross Seyfried has also
published extensively about it. I have a pair of 12-bore Woodwards as well as
several other 19th-c. shotguns by Purdey, Boss, Westley Richards, Dickson,
Alexr. Henry, etc. All have Damascus barrels, originally proved for black
powder, and every one of them has been resubmitted within the past 20 years to
the London or Birmingham proof houses for nitro proof and has passed. I trust
the proof authorities, and have put many cases of smokeless shells through each
of these guns without a moment's worry.
The main problem with your revolver is simply that it hasn't been re-proved for
smokeless, and in the absence of that qualification, you should stick to BB or
CB caps.

Since I'm not a gun expert, and since this thread focuses on BP guns et
al, let me ask a question.
I own a S&W Model 1 revolver. It was designed to fire a .22-Cal black
powder round using a rimfire cartridge. Experts write that it would be
reckless or dangerous to fire any .22-Cal smokeless cartirdge from it,
even BB-Caps, which I understand. BP only. The pistol itself if a
little beauty with a like new chrome or nickel finish.
I would like to fire this little guy at least a few times, but am
having a problem locating primed but unloaded rimfire brass. The BP is
not the problem. Anyone here have any suggestions as to where to
purchase primed .22-Cal rimfire brass and/or the .22 lead slugs that go
along with the brass.
Were it not for prudence, I am temped to try and fire BB-Caps or .22
shorts as a test, but I really don't want to destroy this little bit of
American history.
Kindest regards to all, Harry C.
